How to Make a Homemade Dildo? DIY Dildo Ideas
First of all, I want to clarify what you’re going to find in this article.
There is a good chance that before you landed here you googled “homemade dildo”, “DIY dildo”, “how to make a dildo” or something similar. If your goal is to learn how to make silicone dildos that are on par with what you see in stores, then you’re in the wrong place.
The problem with this method is that it will cost you significantly more, both in terms of money and time, than just buying a dildo from the store. Unless you’re using a Clone-A-Willy kit, which is what we’re going to cover in this article, and which still loses out to an average store-bought dildo.
Second, you won’t find here the endless (and mostly useless) list of all the possible household items you can use as a “dildo” with explanations like “toothbrush handle will fit perfectly in your vagina”. Instead, I’ll explain the basic principles of making homemade dildos so you can experiment with hundreds of possible combinations.

But before we get started, I want to go over some of the safety precautions I recommend following each and every time.
Homemade Dildoes Safety Advice
Always use a condom with homemade dildos
In some articles you’ll see the advice to clean your potential dildo with soap and water, 10% bleach solution or even boiling if the material allows it. While you can and should clean the items you use as a homemade dildo, I strongly advise you to use a condom 101% of the time.
Make sure your homemade dildo has no sharp edges or spikes
Not only are sharp edges dangerous in themselves, but they can also break the condom, increasing the risk of infection.
Choose only items that are not easily broken
This usually applies to cases where household items are used as dildos without a condom, but even with a condom, you don’t want anything to break or turn to mush inside a vagina.
Don’t use homemade dildos for anal
Some people are trying to improve homemade dildos and make them anal-safe, but the effectiveness of all the methods I’ve seen on the web is questionable. I suggest you never use homemade dildos for anal play as it’s extremely dangerous.
Always use lube
As with all sex toys, you should always use lube. Note: Don’t use oil-based lube because it will break latex condoms! I suggest just sticking with water-based lube. You can try using pure aloe vera gel if you don’t have any lube. Also, you can make a homemade lube with water and cornstarch. It’s far from being great but it’s something.
How to make a homemade dildo from household items
There are a lot of things you can use as a dildo, but on their own they are usually too far away from being comfortable. This can be due to several reasons such as:
- The item is too hard
- The size is too small (both in circumference and length)
- The item is not round enough
- Uneven surface
This is why I don’t suggest using things like toothbrushes on their own. Instead, I suggest wrapping the item in a washcloth, socks, toilet paper, etc. to make the toy softer and increase its size if necessary.
Your usual list of items for a homemade dildo would include:
- The base. Something you’ll be wrapping around (the list of possible items is below)
- Something to wrap the base in (see list of possible materials below)
- Cotton balls, makeup sponges or just a regular sponge. These are often used at the tip for an extra softness and comfort, but it’s up to you if you need them
- Duct tape. Often used to secure the cotton balls or wrapping material
- Some rubber bands. Can be used to secure the wrapping material as well as the condom at the base of the toy
- A condom.
The average process of making a homemade dildo looks something like this:
- Take the base you have and wrap it in something soft
- Add cotton balls or sponges for extra comfort
- Secure everything with rubber bands or duct tape
- Put on the condom and secure it to the base with rubber bands if necessary
- Enjoy
I highly recommend checking out this video from Sexplanations about DIY Dildos.
Once you know these basics, you’ll be able to experiment with hundreds of different combinations of homemade dildos.
Possible items to use as a base:
- A candle
- Screwdriver Handle
- Kitchen Utensils
- A spoon
- Hammer handle
- Lotion/Shampoo/Perfume Bottle
- Flashlight
- Bubble maker
- Baseball bat
- Marker
- Lint roller
- Toothbrush/Toothbrush case
- Tennis racket handle
- Drum sticks
- Makeup Brush
- Lemon juicer handle
- Hairbrush Handle
- Saucepan handle
- TV remote control
Possible items to use as a wrapper:
- Washcloth/Small towel
- Socks
- Toilet paper
- Sponges
- Underwear
- Paper towel
- Bubble wrap
As you can see, there is a lot of room for experimentation, so it doesn’t make much sense to write a specific method here. It all depends on what’s available to you.
Using fruits and vegetables for masturbation
You may already know that I’m not a big fan of using food for masturbation, but if you are, you can try the following fruits and vegetables:
- Cucumber
- Carrot
- Squash/Zucchini
- Corncob (can be boiled to make it softer)
- Eggplant
- Banana (unpeeled only). Although many people use bananas for masturbation and it’s kind of okayish, I’m not a fan and don’t recommend using bananas.
Remember:
- Always wash fruits and vegetables
- Always use a condom
- Always make sure that it’s hard enough (not overripe)
- Never use used vegetables or fruits for cooking (from an ethical point of view)
Products to never use as a homemade dildo
- Ice cream
- Lollipops
- Corn dogs
- Hot peppers (seriously)
- Pickles
- Anything soft
What is a Clone-a-Willy?
If you are venturous enough and are ready to spend about $50 without a 100% chance of success, then you can try a product called Clone-a-Willy. Basically, it’s a kit that allows you to make a 100% silicone copy of your or your partner’s penis. It even includes a bullet vibe to turn the dildo into a vibrating one.
The caveat is that you must have a penis at your disposal. Sure, you could try using something like a cucumber instead, but that doesn’t make much sense. The issue is that you can simply buy a ready-to-go dildo for much cheaper.
Overall, this is an interesting product to have fun with your partner but in terms of value for money I don’t think it’s worth it if you’re just looking for something to masturbate with.
Is it All Worth the Time and Effort?
It might be if you don’t live alone and you’re afraid someone might find your dildo if you buy one. But overall, there are a lot of cheap dildos on the market that are a much better choice. Some even cost less than $10. But note that most cheap dildos are made of porous materials, so you should always use a condom with them. Silicone dildos start at around $20 and up.
